PXL-95
A pixel art editor for the browser in the style of Windows 95.
PXL-95 is a pixel art editor that runs entirely in your browser. Draw with pen, fill, line and rectangle tools, pick colors from the CGA and VGA palettes and export the result as PNG. It looks like an application from 1995.
Three ways to run it
No installation required, but possible.
Launch in the browser
Open PXL-95 directly at bjblazko.github.io/pxl-95. It works in any current browser without installation.
Install as a PWA
PXL-95 is a Progressive Web App. Use your browser's "Install" or "Add to Home Screen" option; after the first load it runs without an internet connection.
Self-host from source
Clone the repository from GitHub and serve it locally. PXL-95 has no external dependencies; icons and themes are included.
Features
Tools, palettes, zoom and storage.
Tools
Pen, eraser, flood fill, line and rectangle, as in Windows Paint, each working on single pixels.
CGA and VGA palettes
Switch between the 16-color CGA palette and the larger VGA palette, or pick any color from the color wheel.
Zoom
Six zoom levels from 1× to 32×, from the whole canvas down to single pixels.
Undo and redo
Ten steps of history with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y.
Touch
Draw with one finger and pan with two on iPad and iPhone. On small screens the toolbar moves to the bottom.
Automatic saving
Your drawing, canvas size and theme are saved in the browser's local storage and restored when you come back.
PNG export
Saves the drawing as a PNG file.
Separate overlay
Grid and cursor are drawn on their own layer, so they stay sharp at every zoom level and never end up in your drawing.
Seven themes
Each one modeled on an operating system from the 1980s and 1990s.
Windows 95
The default: gray surfaces with raised 3D borders.
Windows 3.1
High-contrast look of the 16-bit era, after Program Manager.
AmigaOS 3.1
Blue and orange, after the Amiga Workbench.
macOS 8 Platinum
Global menu bar and the warm gray Platinum look.
Motif / CDE
Unix workstation look with 3D bevels, as on SGI machines.
NCURSES / Turbo Pascal
Text-mode look with blue backgrounds, as on the IBM PC.
Haiku / BeOS
Light gray, after BeOS and its successor Haiku.
