CaddyShack v0.5.0 — A Calmer Dashboard, Less Noise

CaddyShack runs next to this website and analyzes its logs. Over the last releases it got better at one thing: showing the people who visit, not the machines around them. Version 0.5.0 finishes that and gives the dashboard a new look.

A calmer dashboard

The interface now follows the same design rules as this website: neutral surfaces, light and dark mode, one typeface, and color only where it means something. The green donut charts for browsers and operating systems are gone — honestly, I could not tell their shades apart either. Ranked bars replace them, and every browser and system keeps its own color, so Chrome stays blue whatever you filter. Bots and scripts are grey.

Less noise by default

Uptime monitors such as Uptime Kuma, crawlers, link previews, static files and images are hidden from the start; one click shows them again. Scripts and scanners stay visible on purpose — the attempts to find a WordPress login on a site without WordPress are worth seeing. A site reached as example.com and example.com:443 now counts as one, and Top Referrers lists only visitors from outside your own sites.

Who made it, and what it is built on

A new About dialog says who makes CaddyShack and links here and to GitHub. A “Licenses and thanks” page lists every project inside it — D3.js, the country shapes, the IBM Plex typefaces, Go — with its license and a link to it. CaddyShack makes no requests to anyone else, and uploaded logs are deleted after an hour without use.

Please update

The downloadable binaries up to v0.4.0 were built with an outdated Go version that contained known security issues. Since v0.4.1 they are built with a current one, and every release is now checked for known vulnerabilities before it is published. The container images were not affected in the same way, but updating them does not hurt either:

docker pull ghcr.io/bjblazko/caddyshack:latest

Binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows are on the release page; the product page shows what CaddyShack does.
